Kylaren avleder värmen från vätskan inuti kylaren, till luften utanför och sänker därmed temperaturen på vätskan, vilket i sin tur kyler motorn. Ett kylsystem fungerar genom att transportera en flytande kylvätska genom kylkanalerna i motorblocket och topplock. När kylvätskan strömmar genom dessa kanaler, tar den upp värme från motorn. Den uppvärmda vätskan tar sig sedan till kylaren i bilens front för att där avleda värmen och transporteras tillbaka in i motorn. En eftermarknadskylare är i regel större och bredare vilket tillåter mer värme att avledas för att hjälpa till att hålla nere den värme en trimmad motor genererar.
